This summer, our house has been filled with family visitors. The Schaffer Six is an active bunch on our own, but when family arrives, we tour the city like its our very first visit. And being the lovers of food and sunshine that we are, we wanted to try some new local spots that are not just known for their flavors, but for al fresco dining with a view. During our first new restaurant outing, I’d consider myself lucky if I remembered to bring diapers. It was one of those days, kids bouncing off the walls, a house full of visitors, plus my own family of six. After hearing, “mommy, mommy, mommy…..,” I froze, and crossed my fingers for no accidents. I couldn’t remember if I brought my keys, let alone a bottle or change of clothes for the baby.

The dinner was miserable to say the least. Brody sat down for a total of ten seconds, and simply wasn’t having it. My sister-in-law and I took turns walking around the restaurant with him, pointing to the pretty view, the water and birds. It wasn’t enjoyable for us whatsoever, but let’s face it, that’s how it is when you dine out with little ones, right? Not so! I turned to the table next to ours, and would be lying if I said I wasn’t envious. This mama of two had it all together with not one, but two toddlers completely occupied. I approached her with one goal in mind. I needed to learn her secret. She showed me her Out To Dinner Bag, and why it was so effective. In a nutshell, it’s a fun, easy to carry bag with toys and games your little ones haven’t seen before. Genius! I don’t know what fairy dust was sprinkled my way, but I was beyond thankful to have sat next to this new knight in shining armor mom friend.

The Baby Cubby To The Rescue

I knew exactly where to go to make the most creative out-to-dinner bag!  The Baby Cubby is a one-stop shop for every parent who has ever felt overwhelmed (hello, fellow mothers of four) or discouraged. BabyCubby.com is user-friendly and I was easily able to locate some signature favorites for toddlers and preschoolers. What I appreciate the most as a parent is that they don’t just sell anything. They literally take the time finding the highest quality, safest baby gear out there. The team over at The Baby Cubby does things like testing strollers, price matching everyday – even with amazon, and offers free shipping nationwide at BabyCubby.com.

Success! We Put It To The Test

I scoured The Baby Cubby’s website for toys for toddlers, and found a few must-have items to make your dinner bag a success. Only you know your child, so when you make your new ‘it bag’ for kids, think about things that will make him/her content. I opted for the following:

A Magnetic Maze– Both my toddler and pre-schooler loved this one!
A Chalk Board Book– I found these books useful for all four of the Schaffer kids.
A Boogie Monster Book (What kid doesn’t think boogers are entertaining?) – I had my older ones read this to my younger two while placing orders.
Beaded Rain Drops – This toy was great for occupying the baby.
Upper Case Magnatab – This item is excellent for a child learning his/her letters. It also kept baby Brody occupied for more than 20 minutes.
Oombee Cube – I loved this toy for baby, because he seemed fascinated with getting the shapes in their proper places, and it was thoughtfully designed so that he can’t lose the pieces. Genius!

The Out To Dinner Bag was a great success on our next voyage out to dinner. It kept all the kids occupied, and we were able to order and eat in peace. No matter how pre-occupied they are, I always remind them to be mindful and have manners when we are out to dinner, like knowing when it’s time to eat, or time to play. Having this bag has been nothing less than a saving grace for us, and likely for those tables around us!
