Wanderlust with Kids: A Family Adventure Through Barcelona & Mallorca

There’s something about Spain that speaks to your soul. The people. The architecture. The music. The sea. It’s all vibrant and unforgettable — and when you get to experience it with your family? Pure magic. Our trip to Spain last year was filled with wow moments, delicious bites, jaw-dropping landmarks, and even a few dance parties along the way. From the bustling streets of Barcelona to the serene coastal beauty of Mallorca, here’s how we did Spain with tweens and teens in tow — and how you can too.

✨ Barcelona: Bold, Beautiful, and Buzzing with Energy

Where We Stayed:
We checked into the W Hotel Barcelona, and WOW. Perched right on the beach with floor-to-ceiling views and a serious rooftop scene, this hotel is perfect for anyone looking to soak up Barcelona’s electric energy — especially if you’re into nightlife or staying close to the Gothic Quarter. (Pro tip: Ask for a high-floor room facing the water. The views are breathtaking.)

What We Did:

  • Casa Batlló (Gaudí’s Masterpiece): No trip to Barcelona is complete without a stop at one of Antoni Gaudí’s iconic creations. Our kids were fascinated by the colors, curves, and otherworldly design. It’s like stepping into a dream — and surprisingly engaging for all ages.
  • Velissima Barcelona: This was one of our favorite nights! An upscale Italian spot that turns into a full-blown party on Fridays and Saturdays — complete with table dancing and singing waiters. Parents can sip cocktails while the kids get swept up in the spectacle. It’s dinner and a show.

Fun Fact:

I bought this cute red dress to wear out in Espana, and was feeling 10/10 cute and cultural…. until ten Spanish girls all wearing red dresses entered the scene. Ha! Rookie tourist move. Or, as they say in Spanish…  “la guiri”!

Next Stop… Paraiso!

🌅 Mallorca: Coastal Charm and Mediterranean Magic

Where We Stayed:
Our home base was Hotel Eden in Port de Sóller, and it was everything you want in a beach escape —

  • Beachfront location with direct access to the sand
  • A rooftop bar perfect for sunsets and sangria
  • Spacious rooms that actually work for families (yes, even with teens)
  • Walkable to shops, cafés, and the cutest marina
  • The breakfast spread? Next-level. Croissants, espresso, local fruit, you name it.

Top Highlights:

  • Chartered Sailboat with Icarus Charters: This was the highlight of the whole trip! Captain Max (who also spent two months on Survivor, btw) took us on a private excursion around the island. The kids swam, we sipped rosé, and the sea sparkled like something out of a movie. We’d do this again in a heartbeat.
  • Bens d’Avall Restaurant: Nestled on a cliffside, this Michelin-starred gem blends sea views with exquisite local cuisine. It’s fancy enough for the grown-ups, but the staff was so kind to the kids and made it feel relaxed and welcoming.
  • Playa Sa Calobra: Tucked between cliffs, this is one of the most stunning swim spots in Mallorca. A must-visit for cooling off in crystal-clear water — and perfect for a family photo op.

Pro Travel Tips:

Rent a Car: Mallorca is best explored by car. Winding coastal drives, hidden beaches, charming mountain towns — it’s all at your fingertips when you’ve got wheels. Plus, it makes hotel hopping easy (and we definitely recommend it).

Top Airlines for Families Flying to Spain:

  • Iberia: Direct flights from major U.S. cities, plus generous baggage allowances.
  • Delta + Air France: Great for connections to Mallorca via Paris or Madrid.
  • United: Offers family boarding and decent legroom (a lifesaver with teens!).

Spain with Tweens & Teens: Our Family Faves

Traveling with older kids means finding that sweet spot between fun for them and fulfilling for us. Here’s what worked beautifully on this trip:

  • Iconic Sights That Wow: Gaudí’s architecture, historic cathedrals, and seaside fortresses gave us major goosebumps and sparked real curiosity in the kids.
  • Foodie Adventures with a Twist: Velissima and Bens d’Avall were big hits because they felt like events — not just meals. We also loved grabbing gelato in town squares and exploring Spanish markets together.
  • Coastal Adventures: Chartering a boat, beach-hopping, and cooling off in hidden coves were the moments our family still talks about. Being by the water kept everyone happy and refreshed.
  • Keep It Light: Literally! Pack light so you can move freely between destinations. Laundry services are easy to find, and you’ll want the suitcase space for all the treasures you pick up.
