Spring break with tweens and teens is a whole different vibe. Gone are the diaper bags and nap schedules. Now it’s group chats, strong opinions, and “Wait… what are we doing today?” on repeat.

But here’s the upside: they’re old enough to really enjoy the experience. And when you prep smart, you can actually enjoy it too.

After plenty of trial, error, and one trip where no one packed a charger (how?!), here’s exactly how I plan, pack, and keep the peace when traveling with my crew.

First things first, if you can save your pennies, fly first class. Kiddos in the back. Not kidding. Just do it. It’ll set the tone for your trip. Think, the calm before the chaos.

Plan Ahead = Everyone Wins

At this age, buy-in is everything.

What works for us:

  • Everyone picks one must-do activity
  • I book flights + hotels early (because 5+ seats together is not for the weak)
  • I pre-book top excursions (they sell out fast during spring break)
  • I research areas that are safe, walkable, and teen-friendly

Bonus: I keep a loose itinerary—enough structure to avoid chaos, but flexible enough to pivot.

Packing Strategy: Independence Meets Oversight

This is the age where they can pack themselves… but should they? 😅

My system:

  • Packing cubes per kid (they pack, I edit)
  • Outfits planned ahead (especially for dinners/excursions)
  • Shared essentials bag (sunscreen, meds, chargers)
  • Laundry plan built in (because they will overpack or underpack)

Each kid gets a carry-on backpack with:

  • Headphones
  • Snacks
  • Charger + portable battery
  • Hoodie (planes are freezing)

Air Travel Tips for Tweens & Teens

This age = independent but still… needs snacks.

What works:

  • Let them “own” their experience
Devices, entertainment, and bags are their responsibility
  • Download ahead of time
Shows, playlists, movies—don’t rely on WiFi
  • Snacks = non-negotiable
    Avoid hanger at all costs
  • Split seating strategically
Keeps everyone happy (and spreads out the chaos)
  • Build in buffer time
    Rushing = stress for everyone

Mama Style: Effortless, Elevated, Repeat

We’re packing light—but still showing up cute.

My spring break capsule:

  • 2–3 easy dresses
  • Matching set (airport uniform)
  • Cute skirts + breezy tops
  • Linen pants
  • Swimsuits you feel amazing in
  • Lightweight sweater

Shoes:

  • Sneakers
  • Flat sandals
  • One elevated option

Accessories:

  • Oversized sunglasses
  • Simple gold jewelry
  • A great tote (aka mom command center)

Other fun extras (if you have the room:

  • Pajamas that feel like vacation
  • Red light therapy mask
  • Sunscreen in all forms, stick, powder, spray… you can never have enough

Final Thoughts: It’s Not Perfect—and That’s the Point

There will be mood swings.
Someone will forget something.
Plans will shift.

But your tweens will surprise you, your teens will (occasionally) laugh with you, let you photograph them, and those in-between moments? That’s the magic.

And somehow, between the packing cubes, the snacks, and the sunscreen—you’ll realize… this is the good stuff.
