How Your Family Can Be a Voice For Change

There’s so much going on, so much hurt and anger, that we want to learn more, do more, and make a difference in this world. We let the truth be told and moving forward it will never be business as usual for me or my family. It’s important to me that together, as a family, educate ourselves, listen and learn, and do what we can to help make a difference for the future. Here is what we have learned while listening.

Thurgood Marshall was the first African American ever appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. He was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and served on the court from 1967 to 1991.

Understanding At Home

If you’re not uncomfortable, you’re not listening. It’s a non-negotiable to show my children how they can use their voices and to stand up for what’s right! But first, I had to talk to my kids about racism. You see, my kids aren’t confused, overwhelmed or exhausted because of what’s happening in the world. They are harmoniously in sync with relishing in their childhood.

It’s almost like they have this shield of armor around them protecting them from the realities of adulthood. They aren’t ignited by any sort of outrage. I guess that’s the innocence of being young?

However, it’s my job to not shelter them, but rather teach them about the injustices of this world so that they can use their God-given voice and show up. Part of being a good human is leading your littles by example. And just like their parents, I always want them to have the courage to stand up against the violence that has persevered in this country for way too many generations. Let’s be the bridge and help them to get to where they need to be! It starts at home!
